Putrada Ekadashi is one of the most spiritually significant Ekadashis in the Hindu calendar, observed with deep devotion by couples wishing for children. Falling on the 11th lunar day of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Shravan (July–August), this sacred day is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, the preserver of the universe.
The word Putrada means “bestower of sons” or “giver of progeny.” It is believed that by observing this vrat (fast) with sincerity and faith, devotees can receive divine blessings to fulfill their heartfelt desire for children and strengthen harmony within the family.
🕊️ Significance of Putrada Ekadashi
According to Hindu tradition, a righteous lineage and caring children are considered a source of joy and spiritual progress. Putrada Ekadashi holds special importance because it is said to remove karmic obstacles, known as Pitru Dosha, that prevent couples from becoming parents.
Observing this fast is also believed to bring:
✅ Prosperity and abundance
✅ Relief from ancestral debts
✅ Emotional peace and stability
✅ Harmony among family members
📖 The Story Behind Putrada Ekadashi (Vrat Katha)
The Bhavishya Purana narrates a compelling legend about King Mahijit of Mahishmati. Despite ruling wisely, he and his queen were childless, which caused them great sorrow.
Seeking a solution, the king approached the learned sages, who revealed that in his past life, he had denied water to a thirsty Brahmin, resulting in karmic consequences in this birth. The sages advised him to observe Putrada Ekadashi with devotion.
The king and queen performed the vrat with pure hearts, and soon after, they were blessed with a virtuous son. Since then, this Ekadashi has been considered highly auspicious for those desiring children.
